About the Tapestry

On September 11, 2001, the world as we knew it, changed. ART FROM THE HEART — AN AMERICAN TAPESTRY is a writing and art project designed to let you express the emotional, spiritual, physical and economic impact the events that began on this infamous date have had on you.

  • Do you now look up when a plane flies by?
  • Must you now show ID when you enter a public building?
  • Have you lost your job due to the shift in the economy?
  • Do you check out fellow passengers when you're on public transportation?
  • Are you frightened or anxious about the "war on terrorism" and your future?
  • Have you lost a loved one as a result of the attacks?
  • Do you no longer feel safe and secure in your Country?

Join the thousands of Americans who are sharing their stories and artwork for this National Tapestry Project.

To participate, write your story or poem describing your feelings and experiences about how events that began with the 9/11 attacks have changed your life and the way you now view America. Then create your own artwork to illustrate what you have written. Refer to our Participation page for guidelines. Your writing and artwork will be printed on 8½" x 11" pieces of special ink jet canvas at CFCA headquarters, and sewn together to become part of the Tapestry.

If you are a teacher, mental health professional, or group leader, and would like to facilitate a Telling Stories Through Visuals workshop in your community, visit the "Participation Guidelines" page, and then contact CFCA: cfcamurals@aol.com.

ART FROM THE HEART was initiated in New York City with union workers, students and community members. This Tapestry will tour major cities where workshops will be facilitated and new panels will be added.

ART FROM THE HEART — AN AMERICAN TAPESTRY will be a testament to the resiliency of the American people. The Tapestry will be exhibited at patriotic awareness events all over the Country. Click on to "Bring This Tapestry To Your Community" site for information.

The events beginning with 9/11 have taken a toll on American life and lifestyles in ways we haven't yet realized or can imagine. Sharing your stories will help other people recognize that they are not alone in their concerns. As time goes on, this Tapestry will provide an ongoing forum for people to have their voices heard, reinforce the feeling of being part of a united nation, and help in the healing process. A "Tapestry" coffee-table book will be produced.
