"The Pledge: An Earth Anthem" is a thirty-six foot movable mural which
visually interprets peace, friendship and harmony. It was created for
the 1994 Summit of the Americas in Miami and used as a backdrop for First
Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton's nationally televised address during the
Summit. A collaboration among children of many nationalities (ages 11-13),
the images on the mural demonstrate the need for co-existence and tolerance.
Through a series of exercises, the participants were required to share,
compromise, be open-minded of one another's views and abilities, and relinquish
control of their own ideals for the best project results similar
to the way the Heads of the Countries did at the Summit of the Americas. The visuals created for this project were oddly interesting. For example,
the images for "peace" are two kids cheering on a friend playing a game
of pinball against a mean wizard out to destroy the world. "Friendship"
is a visual depiction of a multi-national soccer match, with the team
members wearing the shirts of their respective countries. "Harmony" is
a beauty pageant, with the gowns worn by the universal contestants color
coordinated and pleasing to the eye.
